Welcome to the Winter issue of Stories and Stripes! This edition is packed with inspiring stories of students, staff, and programs that demonstrate the vibrant spirit of Herrin Unit 4 Schools. Each feature highlights the ways we are building a brighter future together.
At Herrin Elementary, the Tiger Trailblazers program shows how fifth graders are stepping up as leaders, setting an example for their peers with kindness and creativity. Meanwhile, the Expanding English Proficiency Program is breaking down barriers and giving young learners the confidence to thrive.
Across our schools, programs like the Lego Club and Stars Afterschool Program are providing opportunities for students to explore, connect, and grow. At Herrin Junior High, the Crochet Club blends creativity with community service, while the Cross Country Team teaches resilience and camaraderie on and off the track.
Our high school students are shining, too. The Certified Nursing Assistant Program prepares students for in-demand healthcare careers, while the Woods and Construction Trades Program builds lifelong skills and strengthens community ties. Herrin High’s Math Team is competing at the highest levels, showcasing their intellect and teamwork. And, of course, the stage lights up every year with the transformative power of the High School Musical.
This issue also highlights the work of our Family Outreach Advocates, whose efforts ensure that every student and family feels supported and connected. Their dedication reflects Herrin’s commitment to fostering a community where everyone can succeed.
Finally, we’re excited to announce the inaugural episode of the Stories and Stripes Podcast, where we’ll share even more about the people and programs making a difference in our schools. Scan the QR code below or search for “Stories and Stripes” on Apple Podcasts and other platforms to tune in!
As you explore this issue, I hope you feel as proud as I do of the incredible achievements happening throughout our district. Together, we are creating opportunities, building connections, and paving the way for future success.
With gratitude,
Nathaniel L. Wilson
Superintendent, Herrin Unit 4 Schools
