Stars Afterschool Program Shines Bright for Herrin Families
“We’re here to support families in any way we can,”

For working parents in Herrin, Illinois, knowing their children have a safe, engaging place to go after school is invaluable. The Stars Afterschool Program, serving students from North Side Primary Center and Herrin Elementary, has been a staple for families who need a reliable and enriching environment for their children once the school day ends. Coordinated by Christy Allen, the program provides more than just childcare—it creates friendships, encourages learning, and fosters a strong sense of community among students.
The Stars Afterschool Program accommodates around 100 students each day, ranging from kindergarten to fifth grade. The program allows parents to pick up their children anytime before 5:30 p.m., Parents are charged only for the time their children are in the program, with a base rate of $4 for the first hour and then $1 every 15 minutes afterward. This approach ensures that families only pay for what they need, making Stars an accessible option for many working parents.
Christy Allen, who has overseen Stars since its inception, has made it a priority to create a welcoming space where students can feel at home. “We’re here to support families in any way we can,”
Each day at Stars begins with a snack, giving students a moment to refuel after their school day. “We like to offer snacks they’ll enjoy,” Christy explains. “It’s a little treat after a long day.” Following snack time, students head outside to play—one of the most anticipated parts of their day. Whether it’s the younger students playing tag or the older kids organizing a game of kickball, outside time allows them to release energy and socialize with friends.
In the colder months, the program adapts to keep students active and entertained indoors. The Stars team sets up a variety of activities, from board games and movies to drawing sessions and interactive play. “Even in winter, there’s always something for them to do,” says Christy. The goal is to provide a mix of fun and educational activities that give students a well-rounded experience.
While Stars is fun, it also emphasizes academic support. Each afternoon, students have the opportunity to work on homework with guidance from the program staff, which includes high school students who assist younger children. For Christy Allen, seeing former Stars participants return as high school helpers is the ultimate reward. “It’s wonderful to see these students grow up and want to give back to the program that meant so much to them,” she says. Parents can feel reassured knowing their children have a quiet, supervised space to complete their assignments.
For Avery and Lily Bevis, second grade and kindergarten students respectively, the homework help has been a blessing. “Our parents want us to finish our homework at Stars,” Avery explains. Having older students and staff available to help them allows them to complete their work efficiently, leaving more time for play and family time once they get home.
For fifth-grader Ellie Bink, Stars has been a constant since kindergarten. She appreciates the friendly environment and the chance to spend time with students from other grades. “I’ve made a lot of friends here,” Ellie says. “It’s a place where everyone is kind, and we have fun together.” For Ellie, the program isn’t just an afterschool activity; it’s a community where she’s grown up.
The program also serves as a safe introduction to the school environment for younger students, making the transition to elementary school easier and less intimidating. “The kids who go through Stars feel more confident when they start school,” Christy explains. “They know their way around, and they already have friends.”
The Stars Afterschool Program has become a valued part of the Herrin School District, not only supporting students academically and socially but also helping families manage their busy lives. As one of the largest programs at North Side Primary and Herrin Elementary, Stars remains dedicated to providing a fun, structured environment that nurtures and supports each child’s growth.
In a world where afterschool programs often come and go, Stars has built a lasting impact on the Herrin community, providing support for families and helping children develop lifelong skills and friendships. It’s more than just an afterschool program; it’s a place where students can learn, grow, and truly shine
