Herrin High School Math Team: Competing with Numbers and Nerves
“We get to work together and learn from each other’s strengths.”

In a school where interests are celebrated, Herrin High School’s Math Team stands out for its dedication to numbers and competitive spirit. Led by Coach Kyle Harlow, the team comprises students who excel in problem-solving and collaboration. For team members like senior Vince Champion and junior Tyler Dodson, the Math Team is a unique outlet where they can shine academically while competing against some of the region’s top high school mathematicians.
The Math Team competes in several high-level competitions throughout the year—one four week tournament in the fall and four more in the spring. At each event, they tackle challenging math problems in algebra, geometry, calculus, and more. The fall season kicks off with the SWIC (Southwest Illinois College) competition, where Herrin’s team recently took first place by an impressive margin. Tyler and Vince each earned top individual rankings, showcasing their math skills and strategic thinking.
“These competitions push us to think harder and go beyond what we’d see in a regular classroom,” Vince explains. For Tyler, who loves the competitive nature of math, these events bring out his best. “It’s fun because we’re competing to win, and a lot of my friends are on the team too. It’s about winning together.”
With about 30 members, the Math Team spans grades nine through twelve, and students form bonds across grade levels. The competitions themselves range from individual tests to team events. In SWIC’s team format, each grade takes the same test, which includes a mix of easier and more complex problems designed to challenge students of all levels. Vince, a senior, enjoys helping younger teammates tackle these complex problems. “We get to work together and learn from each other’s strengths,” he says.
The spring season brings more specialized competitions, including the regional competition where each grade level focuses on specific areas of math. Freshmen tackle algebra, sophomores focus on geometry, juniors handle Algebra 2, and seniors solve pre-calculus problems. “Each competition has its own focus and format, so there’s always something new to prepare for,” Tyler adds. The variety keeps the team members engaged and learning.
The team practices once a week, working through challenging problems and reviewing past competitions. “Coach Harlow makes sure we’re prepared, teaching us strategies and problem-solving techniques we can apply during competitions,” Tyler explains. Each week, they tackle new math tests as practice, working independently and then reviewing solutions with the coach. “He’s there to answer any questions and helps us break down the problems,” Vince says.
Coach Harlow’s support is instrumental. In addition to providing academic guidance, he has created a welcoming environment where students feel encouraged to challenge themselves. “He drives us to competitions, works through practice problems with us, and celebrates our victories,” Vince shares.
The district also supports the Math Team, covering travel, meals, and hotel costs for state competitions. Last year, Herrin’s Math Team placed 10th at state—an impressive achievement for the students, and one they’re aiming to surpass this season.
For many members, the Math Team isn’t just about winning; it’s a way to deepen their understanding of math and apply it to future careers. Vince, who plans to study mechanical engineering, views the team as perfect preparation for his chosen field. “It’s taught me to think logically and approach problems with strategy, skills I’ll need in engineering,” he says. For Tyler, who aspires to a career in law, the Math Team has enhanced his problem-solving skills. “It’s helped me become better at working through complex issues,” he explains, recognizing that math isn’t just about numbers but also about analysis and critical thinking.
Their commitment to math is evident in the way they approach each competition, often exceeding expectations and scoring higher than teams from much larger schools. “We put in the effort to improve,” says Vince, “and it pays off every time we place or win.” Tyler agrees, adding that his involvement with the team has made him more confident in his math classes and even beyond school. “Math team teaches you to keep going, even when the problems get tough.”
At Herrin High School, the Math Team may not receive the same attention as athletic teams, but their accomplishments are just as impressive. After a long day of problem-solving at a spring competition, the team returns to Herrin to celebrate with cake, soft drinks, and proud parents. “It’s a chance to relax, look back at how we did, and celebrate our hard work,” says Vince.
The Math Team’s achievements are proof that dedication, teamwork, and a love for learning can create incredible results. With each competition, they’re not only raising Herrin’s profile but also inspiring future students to join the team. And for Tyler, Vince, and their teammates, the skills they’ve gained will last long after they leave high school.
