Running Together: The Strong Bonds of Herrin Junior High’s Cross Country Team
“It’s okay not to win all the time.”

When Max Mazanek and Matilda King lace up their running shoes and join their teammates on the Herrin Junior High Cross Country Team, they’re not just training for a race—they’re building lifelong connections. Under the dedicated guidance of Coach Steve Sgutt and Assistant Coach Matt Zaranti, the team has created a culture that goes beyond running, becoming a close-knit family driven by support, encouragement, and shared goals.
Coach Sgutt, known affectionately as “Coach,” doesn’t just stand on the sidelines. He runs with his athletes, leading by example and sharing in their challenges and triumphs. “Having a coach that actually runs with us makes a big difference,” says Max. “He doesn’t ask us to do anything he wouldn’t do himself.” This hands-on approach has fostered a culture of respect and dedication within the team. As Matilda adds, “Some coaches don’t run with their athletes. Coach Sgutt does, and it really brings us together.”
During practices, the team runs as one, a unified force stretching across different speeds and abilities. In meets, they cheer each other on, with junior varsity athletes shouting encouragement from the sidelines for their varsity teammates, and vice versa. “When the JV team runs, we’re there to support them,” says Coach Sgutt. “And when varsity is on the course, they’re at the finish line cheering.”
Coach Sgutt has shaped the team’s approach not only with a strong training regimen but also with valuable life lessons. In his seventh year of coaching, he’s helped the athletes embrace resilience, discipline, and humility. “It’s okay not to win all the time,” Max reflects, recalling how his first race win gave him confidence but also taught him about managing expectations. “I learned quickly that every race is different, and what matters is giving it your best.” Matilda echoes this sentiment, describing how cross country has taught her about perseverance and handling challenges. Coach Sgutt’s support for each athlete extends beyond the races—he’s even provided shoes for athletes who couldn’t afford proper gear, ensuring no one is left behind.
Herrin Junior High School’s support of the cross country team reflects the community’s pride in the sport. After a successful meet, the team often receives congratulations over the school announcements, and top-performing runners are recognized for their efforts. When the boys’ team placed second at state, the celebration was school-wide, with students and teachers offering high-fives and applause. “We felt the whole school was behind us,” says Max. “Even the teachers would say ‘good job’ in the halls.”
Coach Sgutt takes great pride in his team’s achievements but prefers to keep the spotlight on his runners. “I want people to congratulate Max, Matilda, and the rest of the team,” he says. “I’m just here to support them.” His dedication to their success shows through in every practice and meet, with his focus always on helping the students grow, both as athletes and individuals.
For both Max and Matilda, cross country is more than an extracurricular; it’s a foundation that’s helping them build confidence and resilience. Matilda has been with the team since fifth grade, and the impact of her experience has been profound. “It’s taught me about staying strong and focused,” she says. Max, in his first year, initially joined to condition for basketball but found himself falling in love with cross country. “I thought it was just going to be conditioning, but now I love it,” he admits with a smile.
Coach Sgutt hopes that each runner takes something valuable from the experience. “This is something they can carry through the rest of their lives,” he says. Whether it’s the thrill of crossing the finish line, the friendships built along the way, or the life lessons learned, each season of cross country leaves a lasting impact on the students. With state championships, personal bests, and a team culture grounded in support, the Herrin Junior High Cross Country Team is a testament to the strength of running together—stronger as a team and individually.
For these athletes, cross country is more than a sport; it’s a path to self-discovery and a reminder that, with dedication and a supportive community, they can accomplish anything.
