Welcome to the Winter edition of Pilot!, where we proudly spotlight the remarkable people and programs that are lifting our schools every day. This issue captures the spirit of resilience, ambition, and unity that define Cairo.
From the basketball courts to the classrooms, Cairo students shine. Sophomore Shanti Taylor shares her passion for basketball and her dreams of playing in the WNBA, while eighth-grader Rahjon Woodson reminds us that with discipline and determination, no dream is too big. On the varsity team, Lamon Vaughn leads with heart, demonstrating that teamwork and leadership can drive transformation both on and off the court.
We also celebrate students like Aimya Cornelius, whose involvement in academics, athletics, and school leadership exemplifies the power of balance and dedication. Sixth grader Elijah Whitaker’s kindness on the playground and in the classroom reminds us how small acts of inclusion can build a strong community. And ten-year-old Kayden Nelson, recently honored by the Illinois Principals’ Association, is proof that Pilot Pride starts early.
The commitment of our educators and staff is equally inspiring. Sara Gutierrez, our Dean of Students, fosters a nurturing environment where every child is encouraged to thrive. Marva Sager, who has devoted 28 years to Cairo Elementary, continues to be the heart of our school, guiding young learners with unwavering love and patience. Meanwhile, Rashelle’ Brown’s work as a social worker reflects her profound dedication to supporting students’ emotional and academic growth.
Our alumni and community members remind us that the bond between Cairo Schools and its people is lifelong. Jarvis Woodson has returned to his alma mater to inspire the next generation as a mentor and coach. Romello Orr balances his work as a city councilman and business owner while volunteering at Cairo Elementary to ensure every child feels valued and supported.
This issue of Pilot! is a testament to the strength of our community and the boundless potential of our students. Thank you for being part of this journey. Together, we are shaping a brighter future for Cairo.
With gratitude,
Dr. Ronald Ferrell
Superintendent, Cairo Schools
