Rahjon Woodson: Driven by Dreams and Mentors
“Keep going, never stop chasing our dreams, and always respect our elders,”

For Rahjon Woodson, basketball isn’t just a sport; it’s a way of life. An eighth grader at Cairo Junior/Senior High School, Rahjon has been playing basketball since he was three. Eleven years later, his passion for the game is stronger than ever, and he’s clear about his goals: he plans to play professionally in the NBA. “It’s my favorite thing in life,” Rahjon says, his eyes lighting up. His dedication to basketball is apparent in his daily routine, where practice feels as natural as breathing.
Rahjon’s dreams extend beyond high school. He hopes to play college basketball for the University of Kentucky, aiming to join the Wildcats and ultimately reach the NBA. His admiration for the sport and the discipline it requires is evident in the way he approaches his goals with focus and determination. But Rahjon also has a backup plan—a thoughtful, practical one. If basketball doesn’t pan out, he plans to pursue a career in medicine as a doctor. “I love basketball, but I know it’s smart to have another path,” he says with maturity beyond his years.
Rahjon’s journey has been shaped by several influential mentors who encourage him to keep pushing forward. His science and P.E. teacher, Mr. Campbell, has become a guiding figure, especially in Rahjon’s favorite classes: science and robotics. “Mr. Campbell’s great—he teaches us so much in class and in life,” Rahjon shares. Mr. Campbell’s hands-on teaching style in robotics, where students learn to build and create, has inspired Rahjon to think beyond the court. “I love building things, and science is full of activities I enjoy,” he says.
Another important mentor is Mr. Smith, his history teacher, whom Rahjon describes as “loving, encouraging, and always pushing us to be our best.” Mr. Smith motivates his students with life advice and teaches them to be respectful and resilient. “He tells us to keep going, never stop chasing our dreams, and to always respect our elders,” Rahjon says, showing the values he’s taken to heart. These mentors remind Rahjon that his goals are within reach and that respect and discipline are essential to success.
Rahjon’s commitment to basketball has taught him valuable lessons about discipline and teamwork. At Cairo Junior/Senior High, team expectations are high: students who get in trouble or have any issues with discipline aren’t allowed to play, even if they’re key players. “If you’re in ISS for a day, you can’t play,” Rahjon explains, referring to the school’s in-school suspension policy. This rule reinforces accountability among the players, and Rahjon and his teammates encourage each other to stay on track. “We put pressure on each other not to mess up.”
For Rahjon, basketball isn’t just about winning games; it’s a way to stay connected to his community and build relationships. He describes Cairo as a “big family,” a place where everyone supports each other and shares in each other’s successes. “The environment here is amazing—it’s all about family,” he says, reflecting on the support he feels from friends, family, and school staff.
When Rahjon talks about Cairo Junior/Senior High, his respect for the school is clear. He describes it in three words: loving, encouraging, and respectful. “Everybody here has respect for each other,” he says, appreciating how teachers engage with students in a positive, supportive way. This environment has shaped his perspective on discipline and self-respect, lessons that will serve him both in his basketball career and beyond.
Rahjon’s pride in his school and community extends to his family as well. With a brother and a sister at the school, Rahjon feels a strong connection to the generations that have come through Cairo’s schools. His father and brother also attended Cairo Junior/Senior High, and Rahjon takes pride in following their footsteps. “This school means a lot to me,” he says. “It built me up and encouraged me to chase my dreams.”
Rahjon Woodson’s story is one of dedication, passion, and resilience. Guided by mentors, family, and a community that believes in him, he is determined to make his dreams a reality. Whether he ends up on a professional basketball court or in a medical practice, Rahjon’s future is bright—and he’s ready to give it everything he’s got.
