Lamon Vaughn: Leading Cairo’s Basketball Team with Dedication and Heart
“I feel like Cairo is becoming a better place, and I want to be part of that.”

At 15, Lamon Vaughn has become a pivotal part of Cairo Junior/Senior High School, where he serves as the captain of the boys’ varsity basketball team. But his dedication extends beyond the court. Lamon’s commitment to his school, his respect for his teachers, and his relationships with coaches highlight his deep pride in Cairo—a place he’s determined to uplift even after graduation.
For Lamon, basketball is a way to bring people together. Last year, his team struggled with communication and cohesion. But with a new coach and a fresh focus on teamwork, this year’s season feels different. “Now we’re working on communicating and being stronger as a team,” Lamon explains. Under the new coach’s guidance, the team is spending time in the weight room, working on agility and conditioning. “Last year, we only worked on plays, but now we’re getting faster and stronger, and it’s making a real difference,” he says.
As team captain, Lamon feels a responsibility to lead by example. “I try to listen to my coaches and respect what they say,” he says. His role as captain isn’t just about skill—it’s about inspiring his teammates to work harder and support each other, both on and off the court.
This year, Lamon has noticed a shift in the school’s environment, driven by a new principal, Ms. Darlissa Jones, and the school’s new dean and athletic director. Ms. Jones, whom Lamon respects deeply, has made Cairo Junior/Senior High a place where students feel valued and heard. “Our principal is more involved,” Lamon shares. “She stops to ask us what we need and actually listens.”
The changes go beyond listening. Ms. Jones has invited speakers to talk to students about their futures. For Lamon, these improvements signal a commitment to helping students succeed. “Ms. Jones has a lot of connections, and she’s bringing them here to help us learn more about what’s possible,” he says. “It’s made a huge difference.”
Lamon also appreciates the stricter policies around technology use. Though at first he resisted the rule requiring students to store their phones, he now sees the benefits. “At first, I didn’t agree, but I know it’s going to help in the long run,” he says. With fewer distractions, students are more engaged, and Lamon believes it’s contributing to the positive atmosphere in the school.
A turning point in Lamon’s academic journey has been his connection with his teachers. This year, they’re more involved, taking the time to help students step by step. “They don’t just give us a paper and say, ‘Do it,’” he says. “They actually show us how, and it makes a difference.” He’s also developed strong relationships with coaches like Coach Larry Woods, who has mentored him on and off the court. Lamon credits these relationships for his improved grades and better focus in class.
The school’s positive energy is inspiring Lamon to work harder. “I used to talk a lot and think I knew more than the teachers,” he admits. “But this year, I feel like I’m in a good place.” His growth is evident in his behavior and grades, which have steadily improved since last year.
Lamon loves Cairo and has big dreams for his future in the community.
He’d like to study law enforcement in college and return to Cairo to serve as a police officer. “I want to give back to Cairo,” he says, describing how he’s noticed positive changes not only in the school but also in the town. From new programs at the school to community efforts like the redevelopment of local housing, Lamon is proud to be part of a city that’s striving to improve. “I feel like Cairo is becoming a better place, and I want to be part of that.”
For Lamon, Cairo isn’t just a hometown; it’s a community he’s dedicated to supporting and strengthening. Through his leadership on the basketball team, his respect for his teachers, and his commitment to staying involved, Lamon Vaughn is making an impact that will resonate for years to come. His story is a testament to Cairo’s growth and potential—proof that with teamwork, respect, and dedication, positive change is always possible.
