Sara Gutierrez: Bringing Strength and Structure to Cairo Junior/Senior High
“These kids are resilient. They have strength, and they’re capable of so much.”

When Sara Gutierrez became the new Dean of Students at Cairo Junior/Senior High School, she didn’t just step into a role; she stepped into her dream. Sara is committed to creating an environment where every student feels seen, supported, and encouraged to thrive. In just a few short months, she’s already making a difference, providing structure and guidance through a clear, compassionate approach to discipline.
Sara’s journey to Cairo has been driven by a purpose beyond her job description. Raised in challenging circumstances, Sara understands the weight of being labeled “at-risk” and the expectations that often accompany it. “I want these kids to know they don’t have to be a product of their environment,” she says. As a junior in high school, Sara knew she wanted to become an administrator to help students like herself. Her principal even set up a meeting with a local elementary school principal, a gesture that solidified her passion for this path.
This background gives Sara an edge in connecting with students who may feel misunderstood. “I walk the talk,” she says, explaining how her history helps her relate to the students facing difficulties at Cairo. “They can see that I’ve been where they are, and they don’t have to stay where they are.” Her commitment to helping students grow, no matter their circumstances, is central to her role as an administrator.
One of Sara’s first major initiatives was to introduce a structured approach to discipline. Cairo Junior/Senior High didn’t have a clear flowchart for managing behavioral issues, which often led to confusion among students, staff, and parents. Recognizing this gap, Sara created a transparent discipline flowchart that clarifies consequences for specific behaviors. “Now, everyone knows what to expect,” she says. “There’s less gray area, which helps everyone—students, teachers, and parents.”
Sara’s approach to discipline is to focus on proactive, positive behavior reinforcement rather than punitive measures. Sara has already introduced monthly incentive ceremonies and pep rallies that reward positive behavior, giving students something to look forward to and reinforcing good choices.
Another program Sara has introduced is “Check and Connect,” a mentorship initiative for students with recurring behavioral challenges. Through a survey, students identify goals and areas of motivation, such as seeking adult approval or desiring independent rewards. Based on their responses, Sara pairs each student with a mentor of their choice, who meets with them daily to discuss progress and set new goals.
Weekly progress checks encourage consistency and give students the chance to earn rewards tailored to their interests, such as spending time with a favorite teacher or enjoying extra Chromebook time.
The “Check and Connect” program is about more than behavior management; it’s about building relationships and teaching students that they can change their path. “Kids need consistent recognition,” Sara explains. “When they see that their efforts are valued, they’re more likely to make lasting changes.”
Sara feels deeply connected to the Cairo community. “Cairo has a lot of Pilot Pride,” she observes. “It’s a place with strong family ties and a sense of belonging.” She describes Cairo as a family where everyone knows each other, in an environment that brings both challenges and opportunities for growth. “These kids are resilient. They have strength, and they’re capable of so much.”
For Sara, her first year as Dean of Students is about establishing a foundation of trust, respect, and growth. Her dedication to the students’ success goes beyond academics or behavior; it’s about helping them realize their own potential. “I’m here for the kids,” she says, her voice filled with conviction. “They’re the reason I’m here, and I believe in what they can achieve.”
Sara Gutierrez is not only shaping the future of Cairo Junior/Senior High—she’s shaping the lives of its students. With compassion, experience, and a commitment to structure, she’s building a school community where every student has the opportunity to grow, succeed, and take pride in who they are.
