Welcome to the Spring Issue of Pilot!

Dr. Pamela Rizkallah, Superintendent, Cairo USD #1

There is something deeply meaningful about the word pilot. It suggests direction, purpose, and the steady guidance required to move forward—even when the path ahead is still unfolding.

As I reflect on this spring issue of Pilot!, I am reminded that in Cairo, that guidance does not come from any one place. It comes from all of us.

It begins, as it so often does, with our youngest learners and the families who surround them. In quiet, powerful ways, support systems are taking shape—helping parents grow in confidence and children begin their journeys with a strong foundation. Those early investments matter, and they ripple forward in ways we may not always see immediately, but we feel them over time.

We see those ripples again inside our schools, where students are discovering their voices and learning what it means to support one another. Whether it is a circle of young girls building confidence and self-worth together or a group of students stepping into leadership roles to raise awareness and serve their community, these moments remind us that leadership does not begin someday—it begins now.

Across our district, students are exploring, creating, and challenging themselves in new ways. From after-school programs that open doors to new experiences and connections to students pursuing advanced academic opportunities before graduation, we are seeing a culture that encourages curiosity, effort, and growth.

What stands out most, however, is the character of our people.

We see it in students who hold themselves to high standards and lift those around them through positivity and integrity. We see it in students who quietly pursue their passions—whether through art, competition, or creative expression—while building futures one step at a time. And we see it in those standing at important transitions, preparing to leave familiar spaces with both gratitude and courage for what lies ahead.

We also see it in the adults who continue to answer the call—educators who bring decades of wisdom into the classroom each day, and community members who return home to invest in Cairo’s future, creating spaces where stories can be shared, preserved, and celebrated.

This is what makes Cairo special.

It is not defined by a single moment or a single success, but by a continuous commitment—to one another, to our students, and to the belief that every individual has value and potential.

As you read this issue of Pilot!, I hope you see what I see every day: a community that is moving forward together, guided by care, strengthened by connection, and filled with possibility.

We are proud of where we are. And even more hopeful about where we are going.
