Drawn to Compete, Driven to Create

“Keep pushing your dreams forward and don’t give up.”

Vichai Jangjirawat does not seek attention, but his quiet determination speaks for itself. A ninth grader at Cairo Senior High School, Vichai has built a reputation as a student who is willing to challenge himself—whether through academic competitions, creative expression, or the careful strategy of a chess match.

Vichai is actively involved in several academic organizations, including Beta Club, Science Bowl, math competitions, and Scholar Bowl. Each activity offers a different kind of challenge, but all share one thing in common: the opportunity to think deeply and grow.

Beta Club has been part of his journey for several years, beginning when he was in junior high. Now, as a ninth grader, he is part of the senior high Beta Club, where he is preparing to compete at the state convention in Springfield. This year, he plans to enter art-related competitions, combining his academic involvement with his creative interests. “Favorite thing about Beta Club is I can see what other people can do and see what their talents are,” he said. “This year, I want to give it a test and see if I can do it.”

That willingness to try something new reflects Vichai’s mindset. He does not participate simply to win, but to learn and grow from the experience.

He has also joined the school’s Science Bowl team for the first time this year. Science Bowl brings together students from different grade levels to compete in fast-paced academic contests that test knowledge across a wide range of scientific topics. Though his team faced tough competition, Vichai saw the experience as part of the learning process. “It went well,” he said, reflecting on one of the team’s early competitions. Even when the results were not what he hoped, he remained focused on improving.

Math competitions have been another important part of his academic journey. In seventh grade, he earned a bronze medal in a national-level math competition—an achievement he describes with surprising humility. “I don’t even know how I got a bronze medal,” he said. “The math problems were hard.”

He is also a member of the Scholar Bowl team, where students compete by answering questions across subjects ranging from history to science. Though the team faced a challenging season, Vichai remained committed. He understands that improvement takes time and persistence.

Outside of formal competitions, Vichai has discovered another passion—chess. He first learned the game at school, where junior high science and robotics teacher Mr. Campbell introduced him to it and later gave him a chessboard of his own. That simple gesture made a lasting impression. “Mr. Campbell gave me this chessboard with pieces to it,” Vichai said. “And then I kept it.”

Chess appealed to him because it combined patience, strategy, and creativity—qualities that also define his approach to other areas of his life.

Creativity, in fact, is where Vichai truly comes alive. He spends much of his free time drawing and creating animations on his phone, developing his own artistic style and experimenting with different techniques. “My favorite thing to do is animate and draw,” he said.

His interest in art and animation has even influenced his future goals. Vichai hopes one day to become a producer and director, creating action films and animated stories of his own. He has already begun developing his skills, creating animated videos and sharing them online. “I’ve been animating for like three years now,” he said, reflecting on how his interest has grown over time.

Vichai credits his family for encouraging him to pursue his dreams. His three older sisters, who now live in different cities, have offered him steady support. “They think I should just keep following my dream,” he said.

Though he may be soft-spoken, Vichai’s determination is clear. He is willing to try new things, learn from challenges, and continue improving.

When asked what message he would share with others, his answer reflected both his humility and his quiet confidence. “You can keep pushing your dreams forward and don’t give up,” he said.

Those words capture who Vichai Jangjirawat is—a student who is steadily building his future, one move, one competition, and one creation at a time.
