A Letter From the
Superintendent - Spring '25

“These stories remind us that education is about more than textbooks—it’s about opportunity, perseverance, and connection.”

Spring is a season of renewal, growth, and forward momentum. In this issue of Visions141, we celebrate the remarkable individuals shaping our schools and community.

We highlight those turning passion into lifelong pursuits. Coree Woltering’s journey from Ottawa student to ultramarathon runner is a testament to perseverance. His story reminds us that even the longest races begin with a single step. Similarly, Joey Armstrong brings movement to life through dance, balancing discipline and creativity in both performance and academics.

Our educators and mentors continue to make a lasting impact. Meghan Finley’s return to teach in her hometown reflects the power of giving back. Craig Shymanski fosters a culture of growth through coaching and teaching, while Larry Ummel instills confidence and connection in every student he teaches.

Behind the scenes, dedicated individuals ensure our schools function seamlessly. Glenn Mann keeps our facilities welcoming and safe, Stacy Schmitt manages school finances with precision, and Tony Hancock keeps technology running smoothly—because modern learning depends on it.

Kindness and inclusion remain at the heart of our community. The Lunch Buddies program at Shepherd Middle School, sparked by a simple act of friendship, has grown into a movement. Marisol “Mari” Hidalgo, our School Resource Officer, builds trust and connection, while Leela Grimm embodies resilience and teamwork through athletics.

The arts and music also shine in this issue. Brennen Heaver finds harmony between passion and persistence, proving that music, like life, is about finding rhythm and growth.

These stories remind us that education is about more than textbooks—it’s about opportunity, perseverance, and connection. Thank you for being part of our shared journey. I hope you find inspiration in these pages, just as I do each day in our schools.

At the close of this school year, I will be closing out my career in education here in Ottawa, but it has been such an honor to have been part of this shared journey with you and the children of our community. I hope you continue to find inspiration in these pages and in our wonderful students, just as I have found every day in the good works of our schools.

Warm regards,

Dr. Michelle Lee
Superintendent
