There’s something special happening in Herrin. You can feel it in the classrooms where curiosity is taking root, in the gyms and fields where determination takes shape, and in the quiet, steady moments when a teacher sees a student finally “get it.” It’s the pulse of a community that continues to believe in its schools—and in what’s possible when we work, dream, and grow together.
This issue of Stories and Stripes captures that spirit in full color. You’ll meet educators who are opening doors for students to explore technology, language, and career possibilities they might never have imagined before. You’ll see the next generation learning lessons in teamwork, integrity, and resilience—on the field, in the classroom, and often in the little spaces between.
Our district is also filled with quiet heroes—those who guide, encourage, and nurture with both strength and gentleness. Their stories remind us that leadership isn’t always loud. Sometimes it’s found in a coach’s steady voice, a mentor’s patience, or a teacher’s ability to recognize potential before a student can see it themselves.
And then there are the stories that speak to our heart as a community—the ones about family, faith, and shared pride. From Friday night lights to the joy of intergenerational connection, they remind us why Herrin remains such a special place to grow up, to teach, and to belong.
Stories and Stripes isn’t just a magazine—it’s a mirror held up to a community that believes in itself. It’s a reminder that progress doesn’t come from programs alone, but from people—people who care deeply and give their best, every single day, for the good of our students and the promise of their future.
I’m proud to share this new issue with you and deeply grateful for everyone who helps keep our story moving forward.
With Tiger Pride,
Nathaniel Wilson
