To Protect and Serve: Bryan Kuder’s Commitment to Centralia High School

Establishing Best Practices for a Safe and Secure Learning Environment

When Bryan Kuder stepped into the role of Director of Security at Centralia High School, he brought with him more than just experience—he brought a vision for excellence in school safety. As both the Mayor of Centralia and a dedicated advocate for young people, Kuder has worked alongside district leadership to develop a model approach to school security, ensuring that students and staff feel safe, supported, and empowered.

Kuder’s journey to school security wasn’t a conventional one. A Centralia native and 1985 graduate, he began his career in law enforcement and intelligence, serving in the United States Air Force before working with the Illinois Department of Corrections for nearly three decades. During that time, he held leadership positions within the FBI, DEA, and ATF task forces, focusing on intelligence operations and strategic security measures.

His extensive background in public safety, crime prevention, and crisis management made him an ideal candidate when Centralia High School sought to strengthen its security framework. But it wasn’t just his technical expertise that set him apart—it was his deep love for Centralia and its people.

From the outset, Kuder and the administration recognized the need for a comprehensive, proactive security plan that would not only protect students and staff but also foster a culture of trust and well-being.

Instead of implementing quick fixes, they developed a multi-layered security strategy that would serve as a model for schools across the region. This plan included:

  • Enhanced Physical Security: Metal detectors at school entrances, expanded security staff, and increased monitoring capabilities.

  • Advanced Technology Integration: A real-time security system that allows immediate communication with local law enforcement, ensuring quick response times in case of emergencies.

  • Preventative Measures: Safety drills, student awareness programs, and training for teachers and staff on situational awareness and de-escalation techniques.

  • Community Collaboration: Strengthening relationships with local law enforcement, emergency responders, and city leadership to ensure seamless coordination in any situation.

Kuder believes that security should never come at the expense of a positive school culture. “We’re here to ensure that every student and staff member can focus on learning and personal growth without fear.”

Beyond his role at Centralia High School, Kuder serves as Mayor of Centralia, a position that gives him unique insight into the interconnectedness of the city and its schools. He understands that a strong, thriving school system is essential to the long-term success of the community.

“The well-being of our schools and our city are tied together,” Kuder explains. “If we want Centralia to continue growing, we have to invest in our kids—both academically, and by ensuring they have a safe place to learn and nurture their dreams for the future.”

This commitment extends beyond policies and procedures. Kuder makes a point to actively engage with students, building relationships and offering mentorship to those who need it most. He’s been known to purchase tuxedos for students who couldn’t afford prom attire, help provide meals for families in need, and step in as a trusted advisor for kids navigating personal struggles.

Under Kuder’s leadership, Centralia High School’s security efforts have gained recognition statewide, with other districts seeking guidance on implementing similar best practices. Administrators from across Illinois have reached out, hoping to learn from the success of Centralia’s security initiatives.

The results speak for themselves:

  • Increased student confidence in school safety.

  • Greater teacher and staff preparedness in handling security concerns.

  • A stronger sense of community trust between parents, students, and school leadership.

Kuder emphasizes that true security isn’t just about preventing threats—it’s about creating an environment where students feel supported, valued, and motivated to succeed.

In both his role as Director of Security and as Mayor of Centralia, Kuder sees his work as a long-term investment in the city’s youth. His vision extends beyond the present—he’s building a sustainable framework that will continue to evolve as safety needs change.

“We’re not just reacting to what’s happening today,” he says. “We’re setting a standard that will protect and empower students for generations to come.”

Kuder’s impact at Centralia High School proves that school safety isn’t just about policies—it’s about people. Through his leadership, mentorship, and unwavering commitment, he’s not just protecting the students of Centralia—he’s ensuring they have a bright, secure future ahead.

And as long as he’s got anything to do with it, Centralia High School will remain a place where education and safety go hand in hand.
