Each new season brings a fresh opportunity to reflect on who we are as a community and what truly defines Macomb Schools. As I read through the stories in this issue of Flight Path, I was reminded that excellence isn’t measured solely in achievements—it’s found in the everyday acts of learning, leading, and caring that connect us all.
From our youngest learners at MacArthur to our seniors preparing for graduation, the throughline is unmistakable: Macomb students and staff lead with heart. You’ll meet Brianna Donley, whose work as a speech-language pathologist gives children the priceless gift of being understood. You’ll meet Becky Melvin, whose equation for teaching starts with trust, and Ryan Wilson, whose lessons on the tennis court extend far beyond the net. Their stories reflect the dedication that shapes our district.
Our students inspire us as well. Fourth-grader Cade Rice reminds us that curiosity and creativity go hand in hand. Deena Mangalaraj shows how progress—not perfection—is the truest measure of success. And senior Jackie Rouse proves that determination can turn the once-impossible into reality. Each of them represents the promise of what happens when young people are nurtured, challenged, and believed in.
We also celebrate those who build the culture that makes such growth possible—educators like Stephanie and David Coupland, who teach side by side with empathy and joy; Jacy Biggs, who sparks imagination through art; and Zach Keene, who helps students discover that leadership is about service, not titles. Across every classroom, you’ll find people quietly shaping the next generation of thinkers, dreamers, and doers.
Whether in a math problem, a music rehearsal, or a moment of encouragement, learning here is deeply personal. It’s rooted in connection—between teachers and students, between families and schools, and between our district and this extraordinary community.
On behalf of everyone at Macomb CUSD 185, thank you for taking the time to read, to care, and to stay engaged in our shared story. The pride you show in our schools fuels the work we do every day.
Together, we continue to move forward—guided by purpose, strengthened by partnership, and inspired by the belief that in Macomb, every student’s path is a flight worth following.
Sincerely,
Dr. Patrick M. Twomey
