As summer edges into memory and our buildings fill again with the sounds of laughter, footsteps, and possibility, I’m reminded that the strength of a school district lies not only in its structures or schedules—but in its stories.
This issue of Flight Path arrives just as a new academic year begins to stir. Yet, before we step fully into what’s next, we pause to celebrate those who have helped shape what we are—people whose journeys, passions, and persistence continue to inspire Macomb’s enduring commitment to growth and community.
You’ll meet educators like Joel Hildenbrand and Jeremy Anderson, whose creative spirit and steady leadership echo far beyond their classrooms. You’ll hear from Cindy Bushmire, whose thoughtful presence at the center of the circle reminds us of the dignity in every detail. And you’ll visit a “pizzeria” at Lincoln Elementary where literacy isn’t just taught—it’s served up with laughter, hats, and heart.
In these pages, we also honor the bold arc of our alumni. Some, like Tony Westen and Mindy Frier, came home to teach in the very schools that once taught them. Others, like Yuki Deng, are just beginning their remarkable flight—already demonstrating that age is no barrier to empathy, advocacy, or vision.
Together, these stories are not nostalgic glances backward. They are living reminders of what public education can do when guided by purpose and love. They illustrate our belief that students thrive when surrounded by caring adults, by creative spaces, and by a community that believes in them.
At Macomb CUSD 185, we believe deeply in the whole child. That belief is reflected not only in the programs we offer but in the people who bring them to life. May this issue inspire you, as it has inspired us, to carry forward the spirit of connection that defines our district.
Welcome back to school. Let’s make this year one for the storybooks.
Dr. Patrick M. Twomey
Superintendent, Macomb CUSD 185
