Marty Vaughn: Protecting and Connecting at Unity Point School
“I’m here to help and to make sure everyone feels safe.”

At Unity Point School, where students and staff celebrate diversity and community, one person quietly stands watch, ensuring safety and building trust: School Resource Officer Marty Vaughn. With over five years in the role and more than two decades of experience with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, Marty takes his responsibilities seriously—while also fostering meaningful connections with everyone in the school.
“I’m here to protect all the little kids and to form relationships with them,” Marty says. “When students know me and feel comfortable, they’re more likely to come to me if they have a concern.”
Marty’s days are packed with a mix of security measures and interpersonal interactions. He patrols the hallways, monitors surveillance footage, oversees safety protocols, and responds to any emergencies that arise. From handling medical incidents on the playground to assisting with behavioral issues, Marty’s presence is integral to maintaining a secure and supportive environment.
One of Marty’s key tools is Unity Point’s advanced surveillance system, which allows him to monitor activity throughout the campus, including on buses equipped with video technology. “Our surveillance system is top-notch,” he explains. “It helps me keep an eye on things, but I also make sure I’m out and about so people know I’m here and approachable.”
Marty has witnessed significant changes in school safety over the years. “When I was growing up, schools and churches had open-door policies,” he reflects. “But times have changed. Now we have locked doors, key fob systems, and controlled entry points to protect our students and staff.”
Unity Point has taken additional steps to enhance security, such as installing reinforced window film in the gym foyer to prevent easy break-ins. Marty commends the school for its proactive approach. “They’ve come a long way, especially in recent years,” he says. “It’s not just about reacting to threats—it’s about preventing them.”
While safety is his primary responsibility, Marty places equal importance on building relationships. “First graders are my biggest fans,” he says with a smile. “They wave, give me hugs, and always want to know what I’m doing. It’s great to keep that connection as they grow older.”
These relationships extend beyond the school. Marty has seen students graduate high school who remember him from their time at Unity Point. “When they know who I am, it’s easier for them to approach me if they need help,” he explains.
Marty’s rapport with the students reflects his genuine care for their well-being. “I like kids, and I like helping people,” he says simply. “It’s rewarding to know that I’m making a difference in their lives.”
Marty’s training and experience equip him to handle a wide range of emergencies, from medical incidents to lockdown drills. “Most of what I deal with here is medical—kids getting hurt on the playground or needing assistance,” he says. “But we also prepare for the big emergencies, like an active shooter situation.”
His presence is designed to deter potential threats. “I park my car out front where everyone can see it,” Marty says. “It’s a signal to anyone with bad intentions to move on.”
Marty’s work extends beyond his immediate responsibilities. He partners with other staff members, such as the school nurse and the language teachers, to address specific challenges. He particularly praises Evelyn Perkins, a translator who has assisted him in resolving complex situations. “She’s one of the best I’ve worked with,” Marty says. “Her ability to translate seamlessly has been invaluable.”
For Marty, the most fulfilling part of his job is seeing how Unity Point has evolved over the years. “This school is one of the most diverse places I’ve worked,” he says. “It’s a melting pot of cultures and languages, and it’s amazing to see how everyone comes together.”
He also appreciates the school’s emphasis on inclusivity and support. “Unity Point really cares about its students and staff,” Marty says. “It’s a privilege to be part of that.”
As the school resource officer, Marty Vaughn is more than a protector—he’s a trusted figure, a problem-solver, and a friend. His commitment to safety and his ability to connect with students, staff, and families make him an integral part of the Unity Point community.
“I’m here to help and to make sure everyone feels safe,” Marty says. “If I can make a difference, then I know I’m doing my job.”
Through his dedication and compassion, Marty Vaughn ensures that Unity Point School remains a place where students can thrive—secure, supported, and inspired to succeed.
