Heidi Castlebery: The Unsung Hero of Unity Point School

“Everything I do is ultimately about serving others.”

Behind the bustling hallways and vibrant classrooms of Unity Point School is a quiet force keeping everything running smoothly: Heidi Castlebery, the Principals’ Assistant. For over 20 years, Heidi has dedicated herself to ensuring that students, staff, and parents experience a seamless school day. Her role is as dynamic as it is vital, encompassing everything from coordinating substitute teachers to ensuring the safety of students during dismissal. Heidi’s work embodies Unity Point’s commitment to excellence and community, making her a cornerstone of the school’s success.

Heidi’s journey at Unity Point began as a substitute teacher, covering classes at all grade levels. Over time, her reliability and resourcefulness led her to step into the role of assistant to the principal. “I initially filled in for a maternity leave,” Heidi recalls. “When the position became available permanently, the principal encouraged me to apply. I’ve been here ever since.”

Now, Heidi works alongside Unity Point’s unique administrative team, including Principal for of Instruction Mary Beth Goff and Dean of Students Griffin Groves. While her responsibilities span multiple areas, her primary focus is ensuring the school operates efficiently every day.

Each morning, Heidi’s day begins early addressing needs which may include securing substitute teachers for absent staff. This task often requires quick thinking and a network of reliable contacts. “Sometimes you have last-minute absences, and it’s a scramble to make sure every classroom is covered,” she says.

Once the day is underway, Heidi seamlessly transitions into other roles. She manages office discipline referrals, updates the school’s administrative system, and communicates with teachers and parents about behavioral interventions. Heidi is also a constant presence in the lunchroom and playground, supervising students and ensuring their safety. “The lunchroom is like a well-oiled machine,” she explains. “It’s taken years to perfect, but we’ve got it down to a science.”

Afternoons bring parent pickup duties, where Heidi oversees the safe and orderly dismissal of hundreds of students. “We make sure every child gets into the correct car with the right adult,” she says. “It’s a system that requires a lot of effort, but it’s worth it for the peace of mind it brings.”

For Heidi, her work is rooted in a deep love of service. “My favorite job growing up was waiting tables,” she shares. “I loved the variety and the chance to make someone’s day better. That’s what I bring to this role—helping people, solving problems, and making things easier for everyone.”

Even the more administrative aspects of her job are driven by this philosophy. “Everything I do, whether it’s entering data or coordinating schedules, is ultimately about serving others,” she says. Heidi’s selfless approach is evident in how she supports not just students but also staff members dealing with personal challenges or emergencies. “They’re human, too,” she says. “If I can make their day a little easier, I’ve done my job.”

Though she modestly describes herself as “just part of the team,” Heidi is widely regarded as a central figure at Unity Point. Her ability to juggle countless responsibilities with efficiency and grace has earned her the respect of colleagues and parents alike. “You have to be a go-person in this role,” she says. “Standing still just isn’t an option.”

Heidi credits much of her success to her adaptability and organizational skills. “I keep a notepad with me at all times,” she says. “When so many things are flying at you, it’s the only way to stay on top of everything.” Despite challenges, Heidi approaches her work with a calm demeanor and a focus on solutions. “It’s about keeping things moving and making sure no one feels left behind.”

As someone deeply invested in Unity Point’s success, Heidi encourages others to get involved. “This school is a microcosm of the real world,” she says. “There’s so much potential here, with students from diverse backgrounds and different abilities. I’d love to see more people come in, observe, or even mentor. It’s a great way to understand what makes this school special.”

Heidi’s pride in Unity Point is evident in her words and actions. “This is where I’ve been for over two decades,” she says. “The people here—students, teachers, staff—they’ve got my heart.”

As Heidi reflects on her career, she doesn’t focus on accolades or specific achievements. Instead, she finds fulfillment in knowing she’s made a difference. “At the end of the day, I just want people to feel supported,” she says. “That’s what matters most to me.”

With her tireless work ethic and genuine love for the school community, Heidi Castlebery exemplifies the spirit of Unity Point. Her contributions may not always be visible, but they are deeply felt, ensuring that the school remains a place where everyone can thrive.
