Crystal Phillips: The Heart of Unity Point School
"I’m tough because I care. I want them to succeed.”

Crystal Phillips is a steady and inspiring presence at Unity Point School. As a paraprofessional, she wears many hats, supporting students and staff alike with her unwavering dedication and a genuine love for the school community. For 21 years, Crystal has been an integral part of Unity Point, serving as a Kids Club coordinator, playground supervisor, ESL resource aide, volleyball coach, and much more. Her story is one of tireless service, creativity, and deep commitment to the children she works with every day.
Crystal’s day begins long before most people’s alarms go off. As the coordinator for the Kids Club program, she arrives at school by 5:45 a.m. to prepare for the morning session, ensuring that students from Pre-K to eighth grade have a safe place to start their day. “Some of the kids are still sleepy, so we keep it quiet,” Crystal says. “They can draw, color, or watch cartoons until breakfast or recess.”
When the school day begins, Crystal transitions to her role as an ESL resource aide, working with third-grade students who are learning English as a second language. As an ESL aide, Crystal plays a key role in helping international students adjust to their new environment. She uses tools like iPads for translation to help them engage with lessons. Her approach combines patience, structure, and encouragement. “It’s about making them feel included,” Crystal explains. “We work on English, math, and using technology—whatever they need to succeed.”
Her strict yet caring demeanor helps students feel supported as they navigate challenges. “I tell them, ‘I’m tough because I care,’” Crystal says. “I want them to succeed.”
Her mid-morning is spent supervising students on the playground and in the lunchroom. After a brief lunch break, she gears up for the afternoon Kidz Klub session, which includes snacks, outdoor play, and activities like arts and crafts. When volleyball season starts in January, Crystal takes on yet another role: coaching fifth through eighth graders on three teams. Practices and games extend her already long day, but she embraces the challenge. “It’s a lot, but I love seeing the kids grow,” she says.
As a co-sponsor of the Beta Club, Crystal helps students develop leadership skills, a sense of responsibility, and a commitment to service. The club engages in various community service projects, such as collecting donations for local food pantries and volunteering at school events. Crystal takes pride in helping students explore their potential, often encouraging them to step out of their comfort zones. “Beta Club is all about teaching them that they can make a difference, even at a young age,” she says. Her mentorship has contributed to several students qualifying for national competitions, a testament to the club’s success and her guidance. For Crystal, the Beta Club is another way to help students grow into confident, compassionate individuals ready to make an impact.
Her dedication extends beyond her job description. Whether it’s mopping a floor or helping with last-minute needs, Crystal is always willing to step in. “If something needs to be done and I can do it, I’ll do it,” she says. “That’s just how I was raised.” This proactive attitude has earned her the respect of colleagues and students alike.
Crystal’s deep commitment to Unity Point is rooted in her love for the children and her belief in the school’s mission. She first joined the school as a parent volunteer after moving to Carbondale from Charlotte, North Carolina. Over two decades later, she continues to give her all. “I’ve been here so long because I love what I do,” Crystal says. “This school is like a second home.”
Unity Point’s diversity is one of the school’s greatest strengths, with over 20 languages spoken among its 650 students. Crystal is passionate about fostering an inclusive environment where every child feels valued. “It’s important for kids to understand that people can come from different backgrounds and still care for each other,” she says.
Despite the long hours and many roles she juggles, Crystal remains committed to her work. When asked about retirement, she laughs and says, “I can’t imagine not working. This is what I do—it’s who I am.”
“I want people to know that this school is a safe and loving place,” Crystal says. “The staff here truly care about the kids and want them to succeed.” And in her 21 years of service, no one exemplifies that mission more than Crystal Phillips—a tireless worker, a mentor, and a gem of Unity Point School.
