Driven by Curiosity: Graham Kulpa’s Love for Learning and Life

"Best, two out of three!" (Spoiler alert: Graham is the Rock, Paper, Scissors champ)

At just nine years old, Graham, a fourth grader at Momence Elementary School, is already a memorable presence in his school and community. With a passion for learning, a love of cars, and a talent for entertaining those around him, Graham’s vibrant personality leaves an impression on everyone he meets.

Graham’s school days are packed with activity and energy, starting with his favorite subject: reading. He’s a dedicated fan of the Dog Man series by Dav Pilkey, and he can effortlessly recite page counts, titles, and even plotlines of his favorite books. “I’m really into Dog Man right now,” he shares, “especially 10,000 Fleas Under the Sea. It’s got over 200 pages, but I can finish it fast.”

Math also ranks high on Graham’s list of favorite activities, though he’s quick to clarify that it comes after “eating and recess.” His enthusiasm for recess stems from the freedom it offers for games like soccer—or retrieving wayward soccer balls that manage to escape over the playground fence.

During our visit, Graham eagerly challenged me to a game of rock-paper-scissors, his confidence unwavering as he confidently called out his moves. With the kind of charm only a nine-year-old can muster, he declared, “Best two out of three!” before proceeding to outsmart me in all three rounds. “I’m pretty good at this,” he said with a grin, clearly enjoying the small victory.

Outside of school, Graham’s fascination with cars takes center stage. Electric vehicles, in particular, captivate him, and he speaks with admiration about Teslas and innovative models from Honda. “There’s just something cool about how they work,” he says. “I’ve even seen one in our parking lot. I’d love to drive one someday.”

Graham dreams big about the future. One day, he hopes to become a content creator, combining his love of cars and gaming to entertain an online audience. “I want to make driving games with an actual wheel, shifter, handbrake, and pedals,” he explains. “I’d have four screens and good lighting so everything looks just right.”

Despite his ambitions for a high-tech career, Graham is equally grounded in the daily joys of being a fourth grader. From his animated games with friends to his appreciation for Fun Fridays, he embraces every moment with enthusiasm.

Graham also treasures his connections within the Momence community, where he feels supported by teachers, friends, and even his family. His mother, a teacher at the local middle school, has instilled in him a deep respect for education. “She’s busy teaching three grades,” Graham says with pride. “I’ll be at her school next year, but I’m not in a hurry. I like where I’m at right now.”

As Graham reflects on the small challenges of growing up—like never winning the Thanksgiving wishbone against his older brother—he remains optimistic. “This year, I’m gonna win it,” he declares with a laugh, ready to take on yet another friendly rivalry.

For those who know Graham, his story is a testament to the power of curiosity and connection. Whether he’s sharing jokes with friends, winning rock-paper-scissors matches, or diving into a new book, he approaches life with a mix of humor and determination that makes him stand out.

Graham Kulpa is more than just a student—he’s a reminder of the joy, curiosity, and boundless potential that every child brings to the world, and that our schools help to foster and support
