Ashawnty Felix Embodies the Spirit of Determination at Momence Junior High

“Cheer got me out of my shell. It made me realize how important it is to get out of your comfort zone. It’s not always easy, but it’s worth it.”

Eighth grader Ashawnty Felix is building a future defined by resilience, determination, and an openness to new experiences. Whether she’s cheering on the sidelines, conquering academic challenges, or dreaming of a career in medicine, Ashawnty’s story is one of quiet strength and steady progress.

Cheerleading has been a transformative part of Ashawnty’s journey. Two years ago, she decided to step out of her comfort zone and try out for the team. The experience changed her, helping her grow in confidence and embrace challenges she might once have shied away from. “Cheer got me out of my shell,” Ashawnty reflects. “It made me realize how important it is to get out of your comfort zone. It’s not always easy, but it’s worth it.”

Her parents have been proud to watch her flourish in cheerleading, a path her siblings hadn’t pursued. For Ashawnty, it’s a point of personal pride. “I wanted to do something different,” she says. “I wanted to prove to myself that I could take on something hard—and I did.”

In the classroom, Ashawnty continues to tackle challenges head-on. While math and English Language Arts sometimes feel like hurdles, she’s learning to push through with the help of dedicated teachers like Ms. Russell, who has been a crucial mentor. “Math has been tough, but I feel like I’m getting better,” she says. “What matters is making progress, little by little.”

Reading, however, is where Ashawnty truly lights up. Her favorite genre is romance, and she’s currently working her way through a series by Anna Hong. “I love getting lost in the stories,” she shares. “Books have become a way for me to explore new worlds, and it’s something I’ll always thank my friend Eloise for introducing me to.”

As she looks toward the future, Ashawnty has big dreams. Inspired by a desire to help others, she’s set her sights on becoming a doctor. Though she hasn’t settled on a specialty yet, she’s certain about attending Olivet Nazarene University as her first step.

Ashawnty draws her greatest inspiration from her mother, a hardworking woman who has juggled multiple shifts to provide for her family. “My mom is my role model,” she says. “She’s always there for us, no matter how busy she is.”

A proud member of the Momence community, Ashawnty treasures the connections that make her town special. Events like GladFest, where she enjoys the thrill of carnival rides like “the Zipper,” remind her of the joy and unity that define her hometown.

Looking ahead, Ashawnty plans to join the track team and test her speed. “I think I’m fast,” she says with a smile. “I’m excited to find out.”

Ashawnty Felix’s journey is a reminder that growth comes from stepping outside of what’s comfortable. With her confidence building and her dreams taking shape, she’s poised to leave her mark—not only at Momence Junior High but on the world beyond.
