A Journey of Growth and Determination

"Just take it one day at a time, build good habits, and get it done."

For Eddie Ferreira, a junior at Momence High School, taking it one day at a time have become a guiding principle. From struggling with grades as a freshman to finding purpose and drive in his later years, Eddie’s story is one of growth, resilience, and a determination to make his future brighter.

Eddie, like many high school juniors, is in a pivotal year. Balancing rigorous courses like AP U.S. History, AP Language, and honors math, he’s laying the foundation for whatever path he decides to take after graduation. Though he remains undecided between college and trade school, his goal is clear: to keep his options open and build a future that offers stability and opportunity.

“I’m just trying to set myself up to do either,” Eddie explains. “Whether it’s a trade or college, I want to be in a good position to succeed. I’ve been working hard to keep my grades up and exploring what I might want to do.”

Eddie’s love of math has played a significant role in shaping his interests. With a 97% in honors algebra, he credits his math teacher, Ms. Beck, for helping him excel. “Math has always been my favorite subject,” he says. “It’s something that’s come naturally to me, and having a great teacher makes it even better.”

While Eddie shines academically now, he admits that wasn’t always the case. As a freshman, he lacked focus and motivation, but a turning point came during his sophomore year, inspired in large part by his friend, Evelyn McIntyre. “She really pushed me to do better,” Eddie reflects. “Seeing how driven she was made me want to step up. Now it’s become a habit—I don’t need anyone to push me anymore.”

Evelyn’s influence wasn’t just about academics. Her focus on her own future helped Eddie think about his career goals more seriously. “She’s a role model for me,” he says. “She’s got her plans all lined up, and I want to be able to match that.”

Eddie’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges. An avid athlete, he faced a setback during football season when a high ankle sprain limited his performance. “It was tough,” he admits. “I had high expectations for myself this year, and it didn’t go as planned. But I’ve learned from it. I’m already back in the gym, working hard and getting ready for basketball season.”

Despite the injury, Eddie views sports as an essential part of his growth. Football and basketball have taught him lessons in teamwork, perseverance, and decision-making—skills he knows will serve him well in any career.

Outside of academics and sports, Eddie appreciates the close-knit nature of the Momence community. “It’s different from bigger schools,” he says. “Here, you feel more connected. Teachers and staff actually care about you as a person. It makes you want to do better.”

Eddie also lends a hand around the school office, a role that highlights his willingness to pitch in wherever he’s needed. His contributions to the school community are a reflection of his personal growth and his commitment to making a positive impact.

When asked how he defines himself, Eddie doesn’t hesitate. “I’m ambitious, a hard worker, and I try to stay positive,” he says. “I look for the good in everything and try to make the best out of any situation.”

As he continues his journey, Eddie is focused on maintaining his momentum and preparing for a future full of possibilities. Whether he chooses a path in engineering, construction, or business, he’s confident in his ability to succeed. “I’ve matured a lot,” he says. “Now, it’s just about building on what I’ve started.”

Eddie Ferreira’s story is a testament to the power of determination, support, and self-reflection. For the Momence community, he represents the promise of what hard work and resilience can achieve.
