Building Bridges and Leading with Heart

“Our vision is to empower every student and staff member to believe, then achieve.”

Leadership is about more than managing tasks—it’s about fostering relationships, building trust, and shaping a culture that empowers everyone to thrive. In my time writing about educators and their stories, I’ve met few who embody this philosophy more than Principal Karrie Scheller and Superintendent Brandi Kelly, whose unique paths and shared commitment to this school district have created a partnership rooted in mutual respect, collaboration, and vision.

Mrs. Scheller is a proud Mount Olive native who has dedicated her career to the community she calls home. A graduate of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, Mrs. Scheller’s journey began as a resource teacher in Staunton before she returned to Mount Olive. Over 26 years, she has worn many hats, from first-grade teacher to Title I instructor and fifth-grade teacher, eventually stepping into the role of principal for the district’s elementary and junior high schools. “I wasn’t sure I wanted to be a principal,” Mrs. Scheller admits. “But when everyone had faith in me, I knew I needed to try. Now, I see how this role allows me to help so many more people beyond just one classroom.”

Mrs. Scheller’s leadership philosophy centers on creating a culture of empathy and connection. Her own experience as a struggling reader inspired her to foster an environment where every student feels supported and valued. “I want our kids to feel the way I did growing up here—seen, encouraged, and capable,” she says. This sense of compassion extends to her colleagues as well. From facilitating collaborative decision-making to supporting professional growth, Mrs. Scheller is intentional about building trust and leveraging the strengths of her team. “We’re better together,” she notes, underscoring her focus on collective leadership and shared goals.

Dr. Brandi Kelly, Mount Olive’s superintendent, brings a complementary perspective to the leadership dynamic. A native of Ramsey, Dr. Kelly’s career began as a school social worker, shaped by a deeply personal experience. After losing her younger brother in a tragic drowning accident during high school, Dr. Kelly was moved by the way her school community rallied around her family. “That sense of support and belonging inspired me to give back,” she recalls. Following roles in Effingham and Ramsey, Dr. Kelly found her way to Mount Olive, where she has served as superintendent since 2022.

This year, Mount Olive High School welcomed a new principal, Mr. Josh Martin, who has been part of the district since 2009. Though new to the principal role, Mr. Martin stepped in as dean of students last year when the high school faced a mid-year leadership transition. During this time, Dr. Kelly temporarily took on the role of high school principal alongside her superintendent duties. Now, with Mr. Martin at the helm, his steady leadership is providing the consistency and stability the school needs to thrive. “Mr. Martin has already made a positive impact, and we’re excited about the strong foundation he’s building for MOHS,” Dr. Kelly says.

For Dr. Kelly, leadership is about more than strategy—it’s about creating a culture of hope and growth. “We’re not just growing students; we’re growing leaders—teachers, staff, and even principals,” she explains. Her vision for the district is deeply rooted in collaboration and trust, and she sees her role as creating the conditions for others to succeed. “Culture eats strategy for breakfast,” Dr. Kelly says, quoting a favorite phrase. “If we don’t have a healthy culture, we can’t achieve our goals, no matter how strong the strategy.”

The results of this intentional focus on culture are evident. In just a few short years, Mount Olive has made significant strides, including an impressive improvement in the elementary school’s designation—rising from comprehensive to commendable. “It’s a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team,” Dr. Kelly says. “We’ve built momentum, and now we’re seeing the results.”

One of the district’s most cherished symbols of its culture is a story shared by Dr. Kelly about Mrs. Scheller’s battle with breast cancer. During Dr. Kelly first year at Mount Olive, staff members surprised Mrs. Scheller by wearing shirts that read “She Doesn’t Fight Alone,” a gesture that underscored the deep sense of community within the district. “It’s moments like these that remind us why we do what we do,” Dr. Kelly reflects.

Both leaders are passionate about the district’s commitment to growth. From expanding dual-credit offerings to introducing new Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs, Mount Olive is providing its students with a wide range of opportunities to prepare for the future. The district’s strategic plan, which focuses on culture, academic excellence, facilities, and finance, serves as a roadmap for this progress. “Our vision is to empower every student and staff member to believe, then achieve,” Dr. Kelly says.

As they look ahead, Mrs. Scheller and Dr. Kelly are united in their commitment to creating an environment where students, staff, and the community can thrive. “Leadership is about building relationships and fostering trust,” Mrs. Scheller says. “When we invest in people, we create a foundation for success that benefits everyone.”
