Faster Than Her Mom—and Still Picking Up Speed

"Believe in yourself. God is with you. Don’t forget—it’s okay to lose. You can beat them. Anything positive, really."

At most schools, setting a new track record is a big deal. But at Mount Olive, it comes with a little added pressure when the record you’re breaking once belonged to your own mother.

That’s exactly what Alena Graham, a soon-to-be freshman, did this season—not once, but twice—taking down a record in the 400-meter dash her mom set years ago as a student herself at Mount Olive Schools.

“My mom had the school record. Now I have it,” Alena said with a proud smile. “I broke it twice this season.”

Her personal best in the 400? A stunning 59 seconds, with a goal to break that mark again in high school. She also runs the 100-meter dash with a PR of 12.78 seconds, and she anchors the 4x400 relay alongside younger teammates—including two sixth graders. “It’s a little harder with such a young group, but it’s been fun,” she said. “And yes, I’m the anchor. My job is to catch up if we’re behind.”

Alena’s blend of natural talent and discipline has made her a force in junior high track—and she’s only just getting started. She went all the way to state this year and even claimed a state record in one of her events. “I’m not even sure which school we were up against,” she admitted. “But I just ran my heart out.”

What makes Alena especially compelling isn’t just her speed, but her mindset. She prepares with affirmations, telling herself things like “Believe in yourself” and “God is with you.” Before each race, she stretches, stays in motion, and clears her mind of doubt. “It’s a mental game, big time,” she said. “You just have to run your heart out and trust yourself.”

While track is her main sport, she’s also deeply in love with volleyball, playing as an outside hitter thanks to her height and impressive vertical. “I’ve got the highest vertical in my school,” she said, casually. “I don’t know the number, but it’s high.”

Beyond athletics, Alena enjoys science, writing, and spending time with friends—most of whom also play sports. Her favorite teacher is Mrs. Heyen, whom she describes as kind, helpful, and supportive. “She just makes class better,” Alena said.

Though she’s a bit nervous about starting high school, Alena’s optimism is already guiding her forward. “People say it’s better than middle school, and I’m hoping for the best,” she said. “It’s a little scary, but I think I’ll be okay.”

Her long-term dream? Cosmetology. She’d like to stay in the area, build a life nearby, and continue doing what she loves—whether that’s designing a hairstyle, diving for a volleyball, or chasing down her own school record one more time.

Whatever the setting, Alena Graham will show up with confidence, humility, and hustle.

And her mom? She’s still beaming—from the sidelines… and the record board.
