A Chance to Dance Gives Every Student a Uniquely Special Chance to Shine

The Transformative Power of Inclusive Celebration Lifts A Community

Inclusion and celebration of every student are at the heart of the SCHS mission. This commitment comes to life every October during A Chance to Dance, an extraordinary event that offers students with significant special needs an unforgettable day of connection, joy, and self-expression. For educators like Cris Rector and Mindy Veach, this event is not just a dance—it’s a testament to the power of community and compassion.

Held annually at Bretz Wildlife Lodge and Winery in Carlyle, A Chance to Dance is a collaborative effort put on by two local schools, and provides a prom-like experience for students with significant developmental delays, intellectual disabilities, and other special needs. With support from dedicated sponsors and the enthusiastic participation of general education students, the event is a day of inclusive celebration.

“This is the highlight of our students’ year,” says Cris Rector, who has spent 26 years teaching at Salem Community High School and oversees the Training for Life Skills (TLC) class. “They look forward to it from the first day of school. Seeing them relax, dance, and make friends—it’s incredible.”

For Cris, who is retiring this year, the event holds a special place in her heart. Her students, many of whom have autism, Down syndrome, or traumatic brain injuries, typically spend much of their school day in her self-contained classroom. At A Chance to Dance, they step into a vibrant world filled with music, laughter, and opportunity. “They’re not just participating—they’re shining,” Cris says. “Watching them step out of their comfort zones and connect with others is something I’ll never forget.”

The event is structured to maximize both fun and developmental benefits. Students rotate through a variety of stations designed with their needs in mind, from making slime and crafting photo frames to enjoying sensory-friendly areas. There’s even a bingo game and balloon animal artistry. For those who need downtime, quiet spaces provide a calming retreat.

“It’s more than just a dance,” explains Mindy Veach, General Studies Coordinator at SCHS. “The stations are developmentally appropriate, and they encourage social interaction and creativity. Students get to engage on their own terms, whether they’re creating crafts, playing games, or just enjoying the moment.”

The dance itself is the centerpiece of the day, with a DJ spinning popular hits and classics alike. For many students, this is their first experience with a prom-like event. “It’s awesome," Mindy says. “For students who might not attend a traditional homecoming or prom, this gives them a chance to feel included, to be celebrated, and to have those formative experiences.”

The benefits extend beyond the students themselves. General education students from hosting schools like Carlyle and Central High School join the event to assist, engage, and dance alongside their peers. This interaction fosters empathy, understanding, and friendships that often carry forward.

“Our students realize they’re not alone,” Mindy says. “They see peers from other schools who share similar experiences, and it helps them feel connected to a larger community. For the general education students, it’s a chance to build relationships and see the world through a different lens.”

Each year, local businesses sponsor the event, ensuring there’s no cost to participating schools. Students and teachers arrive to find personalized gift bags, including matching T-shirts bearing the names of sponsors. At the end of the day, students leave with another bag of goodies as a keepsake. “The sponsors make this all possible,” Cris notes. “Their support ensures that every student feels special, from start to finish.”

The impact of A Chance to Dance is profound. For Cris and Mindy, seeing their students embrace the day’s activities with joy and confidence is a deeply rewarding experience. “It’s not just about the dancing or the crafts,” Cris says. “It’s about building memories and showing these kids they’re valued, celebrated, and part of something bigger.”

As Cris prepares to retire, she reflects on the legacy of this event. “A Chance to Dance embodies what education should be about,” she says. “It’s about lifting students up, meeting them where they are, and helping them shine. This day, this event—it’s everything.”

For these Salem Wildcats, A Chance to Dance is more than an event. It’s a celebration of community, inclusion, and the incredible spirit of every student who steps onto the dance floor.
