As we stand on the threshold of another school year at Salem Community High School, I want to take a moment to look back—not just at what we’ve accomplished, but at the stories that remind us why our work matters.
In this summer issue of The Broadcast, you’ll read about students who have discovered their purpose through unexpected passions: a muralist who painted her way into the community’s heart, a recycling leader who found quiet influence in stewardship, and an esports competitor who turned digital skill into real-world confidence. You’ll meet young men who’ve served foster children and built beds for those without, and young women who’ve offered comfort and care in nursing homes while balancing school, sports, and after-school jobs. These are not just achievements—they are reflections of character, compassion, and commitment.
You’ll also meet the adults behind the scenes—the paraprofessionals who form bonds of trust with students who need it most, the math coach reigniting a culture of excellence, and alumni keeping education alive through scholarships that open doors for future generations. And, of course, you’ll read about teams in motion: our soccer players, bass anglers, and academic competitors who are pushing boundaries and building lasting bonds.
Each of these stories points to something deeper than performance. They speak to resilience. To kindness. To what happens when students are seen, supported, and encouraged to lead from wherever they stand.
At Salem Community High School, we don’t define success by a single metric. We see it in the friendships forged on a fishing boat, in the confidence built at a chalkboard, in the gentle presence of a CNA student holding a patient’s hand. And as we prepare to open our doors for a new year, I want every student, parent, and staff member to know: you are part of something extraordinary.
Welcome back. Let’s continue building, believing, and becoming—together.
Warm regards,
Brad Detering
Superintendent
