Each new issue of Stories and Stripes reminds me just how much heart beats within our schools. The stories in this Winter edition shine a light on the people who make Herrin CUSD #4 so extraordinary—students, teachers, and community members who show, every day, what it means to learn, lead, and care for one another.
In these pages, you’ll meet students who model kindness through the Best Buddies program, where inclusion isn’t just an idea—it’s a way of living. You’ll find creativity and courage “Beyond the Curtain,” where young performers discover that the stage can reveal confidence they never knew they had. You’ll see educators whose compassion builds spaces that feel like home, whether that’s a sensory room where calm takes shape or a classroom that glows with curiosity and joy.
Herrin has always valued effort, character, and connection. Those traits come through in the stories of students pushing boundaries—from musicians fine-tuning their craft and athletes leading by example to future teachers finding their call to serve the next generation. Each story is a reminder that greatness doesn’t always make headlines—it grows quietly in classrooms, hallways, and homes where people believe in one another.
As a district, we continue to build on that belief. We’re investing not only in facilities but in relationships—between staff and students, schools and families, Herrin and the world beyond. The strength of our community comes from that bond, the understanding that every success, large or small, belongs to all of us.
Thank you for being part of this journey, for celebrating our students, and for standing with our schools. Together, we continue to learn, to grow, and—as always—to fly our colors with pride. Go Tigers!
Warm regards,
Nathaniel L. Wilson
Superintendent, Herrin CUSD #4
