Dear Herrin CUSD 4 Community,
Spring is a season of growth, and in Herrin Schools, that growth is everywhere—on our courts and fields, in our classrooms and labs, and in the hearts of students who inspire us with their determination. This issue of Stories and Stripes celebrates the many stories of perseverance, achievement, and community that define our district.
As we prepared this issue, we were heartbroken to learn of the passing of one of our own—Herrin High School junior Wyatt Reed. Wyatt’s story of strength and courage in his battle with cancer was one we had planned to share in celebration of his resilience. Now, with deep sadness and immense respect, we share his story in memory of a remarkable young man who inspired us all. Wyatt’s legacy lives on in the love he showed his family, the courage he demonstrated in the face of challenge, and the example he set for his classmates and community.
Even in our grief, the spirit of Herrin shines bright. And we dedicate this issue to Wyatt’s memory, and in his spirit of embracing life, even in difficulty, our students continue to reach new heights in academics, athletics, and the arts. The Herrin Junior High girls basketball team made history, finishing second in the state, and Kyrese Lukens became Herrin High’s all-time leading basketball scorer. Our middle school math team is headed to state, a testament to the dedication and talent of our students and staff.
We are also proud of programs like Educators Rising and Construction Trades, which are preparing students for meaningful futures while serving our broader community. From a student-built doghouse for the police department’s K-9 unit to the performances of Cinderella and Willy Wonka Junior in our school drama programs, our students are making their mark through creativity, compassion, and commitment.
This spring, we are reminded that every student journey is a story worth telling. Thank you for standing with us, through joy and sorrow, as we lift up the voices, dreams, and accomplishments of Herrin CUSD 4. Your continued support makes this a place where students not only grow—but thrive.
With gratitude,
Dr. Nathaniel Wilson
Superintendent, Herrin CUSD 4
