A Rising Advocate: The Story of Kairei Martin

“The teachers here accept us for who we are,”

At just 13 years old, Kairei Martin, an eighth grader at Meridian CUSD #101, is already shaping a vision for her future—and it’s one rooted in advocacy, ambition, and unity. Having attended the district since Pre-K, Kairei exemplifies what it means to grow within a school community dedicated to helping students pursue their dreams.


For Kairei, the dream is clear: to become a lawyer, specifically a divorce lawyer. While many her age might dream of fantastical careers or fame, Kairei’s aspiration is practical and considered. “I’ve read a little about it, and it stood out to me because it’s different,” she says.


Encouraged by her stepdad’s observation that her sharp debating skills make her well-suited for the courtroom, Kairei has already started exploring pathways to her goal. While Shawnee College doesn’t currently offer legal preparatory programs, Kairei has her sights set on future opportunities, like programs that introduce high school students to the legal profession. “One high schooler I know went to California for a beginner lawyer program,” she shares, her excitement evident. “I’m thinking about doing something like that in 9th or 10th grade.”


While Kairei is focused on her dream of becoming a lawyer, she is also a talented athlete with a love for sports. She plays softball, volleyball, and track, balancing her athletic pursuits with her academic ambitions. Of these, softball holds a special place in her heart. She’s been playing since she was six and now plays second base for her school’s team.


In volleyball, Kairei shines as a server and back-row player. Although a thumb injury cut her seventh-grade season short, she’s eager to return to the court in February for her final middle school season. In track, she excels in the 4x100 relay and is preparing to add the 100-meter dash to her repertoire this year.


Despite her achievements, Kairei remains humble. “Sports have taught me discipline and teamwork,” she reflects. “These are lessons I can take with me into the future.”


Athletics isn’t Kairei’s only passion. Since fourth grade, she has played the clarinet in Meridian’s band. The band, which combines middle and high school students, plays at events like the Christmas program and graduation ceremonies.


Kairei credits her mother and sister as her biggest inspirations. Her sister, a nursing student at Shawnee College, motivates her with her determination and hard work, while her mother, a receptionist at a local dentist’s office, models dedication and perseverance. “They encourage me to follow my dreams,” Kairei shares.


At school, Kairei finds inspiration in Principal Ms. Dillard. “She’s so helpful and stands out because of how much she does for everyone,” Kairei says. Though Kairei doesn’t aspire to follow in Ms. Dillard’s administrative footsteps, she admires the way her principal leads with compassion and strength.


Having been part of Meridian’s school community since she was four, Kairei has witnessed the ways the school fosters a sense of belonging among its students. “The teachers here accept us for who we are,” she explains. “They encourage us to follow our dreams and help us every day with what they say and do.”


Kairei acknowledges that no school is perfect and that Meridian, like any other, faces challenges. But she insists that Meridian’s true identity lies in its inclusivity and support. “Some people think our school is just about fights and trouble, but that’s not who we are,” she asserts. “The teachers get to know the kids and accept them for who they are. That’s what makes Meridian special.”


As Kairei prepares to transition to high school, she does so with a sense of purpose and confidence. Whether she’s arguing a case as a future lawyer or leading a team on the softball field, her determination is evident. For now, she’s focused on enjoying her final year at Meridian Junior High and making the most of every opportunity.
