Balancing Strength, Smarts, and Softball

"Softball has taught me more than just how to play—it’s about discipline, teamwork, and finding joy in the grind."

For Avery Mulvey, a senior at Newton Community High School, the Illinois State Scholar distinction is just one of many accolades in a life defined by hard work and resilience. With a GPA that reflects her dedication and a knack for excelling in both academics and athletics, Avery is preparing to take her next steps into a future full of promise.

Growing up in Jasper County, Avery attended Ste. Marie Elementary, Newton Elementary, Jasper County Junior High, and then Newton Community High School, where she quickly established herself as a standout student. “It’s been great growing up here,” she says. “The community is close-knit, and the teachers are always willing to help.”

Avery’s academic achievements are matched by her prowess on the softball field. A travel softball player for most of her life, she has spent countless hours honing her skills, traveling across the country, and competing at the highest levels. “Softball has been a constant for me,” she explains. “It’s taught me time management, discipline, and how to push through challenges.”

Her commitment to the sport has opened doors to collegiate opportunities. Having considered schools like MIT and Denison University, she is weighing her options while navigating the complexities of balancing athletics and academics. “Denison is a great school, but the costs are steep,” Avery notes. “I’m also looking at schools in Illinois, thanks to my mom’s position as a professor at Eastern Illinois University, which offers tuition benefits.”

Academically, Avery shines brightest in math and science, crediting her love of these subjects to supportive teachers who make learning engaging. Her future aspirations reflect this interest—she plans to pursue a career as a physician assistant, potentially specializing in pediatrics or dermatology. “I’ve always loved kids, and I want to be in a role where I can make a positive impact on their lives,” she says.

This decision stems from personal experiences, including completing a certified nursing assistant (CNA) course at Newton Community High School under Mandy Rieman's guidance. Working in nursing homes and assisted living facilities gave Avery valuable insights into patient care and solidified her desire to work in healthcare. “It was eye-opening to see the challenges and rewards of the profession,” she shares.

Beyond her academic and athletic pursuits, Avery is actively involved in Beta Club, Science Club, and Math Club. Through Beta Club, she participates in community service projects like the Shoebox Initiative, which provides gifts for local children in need. “It’s a small way to give back, but it means a lot to me,” she says.

Avery’s work ethic extends to her part-time jobs at Homewood Grill and her aunt’s hair salon, as well as giving softball lessons to younger players. “Teaching little girls how to play is incredibly rewarding,” she says. “It’s not just about the game—it’s about building confidence and having fun.”

Despite her packed schedule, Avery remains grounded, attributing much of her success to her family’s support. With a mother in academia, a father who perseveres through chronic pain, and siblings pursuing their own unique paths, Avery draws inspiration from the resilience and determination of those around her.

Looking ahead, Avery is excited about the opportunities college will bring. Whether she stays close to home or ventures farther afield, she’s determined to make the most of her experiences. “It’s about finding the right fit and pursuing what I’m passionate about,” she says.

As her time at Newton Community High School comes to a close, Avery reflects on the friendships and memories that have shaped her journey. “The relationships I’ve built through sports and school are what I’ll cherish most,” she says. “They’ve made these years unforgettable.”

For Avery Mulvey, the future is a blend of ambition, hard work, and a commitment to making a difference—on the field, in the classroom, and beyond.
