Courtney Klier’s Journey as Newton Elementary’s Full-Time Substitute

She mentions the pride she feels as a Jasper County native and how special it is to be an “Eagle” again.

Courtney Klier's passion for teaching and the connection she feels to her hometown of Newton and Jasper County is palpable. She exudes a kind of positive energy her students must surely benefit from. Her role as a full-time substitute teacher is especially meaningful because she has the chance to work with every grade level, K-6, making each day different and exciting.

Klier has a strong background in education, having previously taught sixth grade for 16 years in Robinson. She is familiar with both the middle school and elementary environments, which provides her with a unique perspective as she navigates various teaching roles at Newton Elementary School.

Despite the challenges that come with being a full-time substitute, Klier enjoys the variety in her day-to-day responsibilities. We agreed that it’s like “improv theater,” as she never knows exactly what her day will bring. She thrives on the unpredictability, which keeps her on her toes and allows her to develop meaningful connections with students of all ages.

Klier's dedication to her community and school is evident. After years of teaching in a different district, her return to Newton felt like coming home. She mentions the pride she feels as a Jasper County native and how special it is to be an “Eagle” again. The connections she has built with her colleagues and the support she receives from them make her experience even more meaningful.

Being close to her own children, who attend Newton Elementary, has been another rewarding aspect of her work. While her oldest child proudly acknowledges her presence at school, her younger child is more reserved, but Klier appreciates the opportunity to be involved in their educational journey.

Her role as a substitute has given her a newfound appreciation for all grade levels, from the sweet and enthusiastic first graders to the independent and curious sixth graders. Klier values the distinct growth and development that students go through, noting the significant differences even within just a few months as they progress through the grades.

Despite not having her own classroom, Klier has found ways to adapt and enjoy her unique role. She credits her prior teaching experience, as well as the support and guidance of her colleagues, for helping her transition smoothly into the role of a full-time substitute. She reflects on the importance of flexibility, acknowledging that although she is naturally a planner, she has learned to embrace the uncertainty of her role and finds satisfaction in knowing that, as long as the students are learning and growing, her day has been a success.

Courtney Klier embodies the spirit of an educator who is not only passionate about her work but also deeply connected to her community. Her enthusiasm and adaptability make her a valuable asset to Newton Elementary, and her story is one that leaves the community feeling proud to have her as part of their district and the community.
