A Third Grader with Big Dreams and a Love for the Game—Meet Patrick Brink

"I like organizing things, but I also like playing ball. I think being a ref would be fun."

For New Boston third-grader Patrick Brink, school is a mix of learning, playing, and dreaming about the future. He’s got a sharp mind, a competitive streak, and a love for both sports and structure—whether it’s organizing books, lining up kickball teams, or thinking about his future as a basketball referee.

Patrick is an all-in athlete, playing basketball, football, and baseball. He spends much of his free time on the field or the court, refining his skills and figuring out where he fits best. When it comes to baseball, he gravitates toward the infield, playing shortstop and pitcher—two positions that require quick thinking, fast reflexes, and strong leadership. "I like getting people out at first base," he says with a grin, enjoying the strategy of the game as much as the action.

Football is another favorite, though his biggest sports passion might surprise people. While many kids his age dream of hitting game-winning shots, Patrick envisions himself officiating them. "I want to be a basketball referee," he says confidently. "I think it’d be fun to call the game." He already watches basketball games closely, observing the rules and learning what it takes to manage the flow of play.

When Patrick isn’t on the field or court, he’s deep into reading and math, his two favorite subjects at New Boston Elementary School. "I like ELA," he says, referring to English Language Arts, where he enjoys reading books from the "My Weird School" series. He also has a strong interest in math, diving into fractions—an advanced concept for a third-grader. "I think I started fractions in fifth grade," his interviewer tells him, amazed at Patrick’s progress.

Beyond academics and sports, Patrick enjoys playing Roblox, organizing his books, and building Lego cars. His natural sense of order extends beyond the classroom—he takes pride in keeping things organized and in their proper place, a trait that serves him well in both school and sports.

Family plays a big role in Patrick’s life. He has an older sister, an older brother, and a younger brother, putting him right in the middle. His younger brother is just two years younger than him, while his older siblings help set the example. He also has a cousin, Phil, who plays junior high basketball, though Patrick is quick to point out that Phil "mostly sits on the bench." Still, he respects his cousin’s commitment to the team.

When asked what he loves most about school, Patrick thinks for a moment before giving a thoughtful answer. "I like that it’s organized," he says. "I like organizing things." It’s a simple statement, but one that sums up who he is—a kid who values structure, enjoys strategy, and always has a plan in mind.

With his mix of athleticism, intelligence, and a clear sense of direction, Patrick is set to make a mark—whether he’s calling fouls on a basketball court or keeping his world neatly in order.
