Sandler Sloan: Balancing Sports, School, and Ambition
“It’s fun to be part of something bigger than yourself,”

Sandler Sloan exemplifies the best of what it means to be a student-athlete. Whether competing in cross country, basketball, or track, Sandler’s dedication, strategic thinking, and love for his community shine through. Balancing his athletic commitments with academics and hobbies, he is a role model for his peers and a source of pride for the Benton Jr. High community.
Sandler Sloan, a 7th grader at Benton Jr. High has a passion for basketball that runs deep. started with Benton’s Future Rangers program when he was just a kindergartner. Now a point guard for the junior high team, he thrives on the game’s fast pace and the responsibility that comes with his position.
“Point guard is about making decisions,” Sandler says. “You have to think quickly—whether to pass, dribble out of a trap, or fake out a defender. Every play is about strategy.”
He admires players like Isaac Billington and Evan Munoz, former Rangers who inspired him with their skill and teamwork. “Watching them play last year was amazing,” Sandler recalls. “They showed me what it means to work hard and play for your team.”
Sandler’s father, an assistant coach, has also influenced his love for basketball, providing guidance both on and off the court. “It’s great to have him as a coach,” Sandler says. “He’s helped me grow as a player and a person.”
Cross country may be an individual sport, but for Sandler, it’s all about strategy and perseverance. Competing on Benton’s challenging 1.86-mile course, he’s set an ambitious goal for next season: breaking the 11-minute mark.
“One of the key strategies is being strong on hills,” Sandler explains. “That’s where a lot of runners slow down, so I focus on building momentum and staying tough.”
He also emphasizes the importance of pacing. “You can’t burn all your energy at the start, but you also can’t get boxed in. It’s about finding the right balance,” he says.
Sandler credits cross country with teaching him mental toughness and the value of preparation. “Every race is a chance to push yourself,” he says. “It’s rewarding to see the progress you make over time.”
In track, Sandler’s versatility is on full display. Competing in events like the 400-meter dash, 4x400 relay, and long jump, he enjoys the variety the sport offers. His favorite event, the 4x400 relay, highlights his love for teamwork.
“Relays are exciting because they’re all about trust,” Sandler says. “You have to rely on your teammates to do their part; they’re counting on you to do yours.”
He also appreciates the supportive atmosphere at meets, where teammates cheer each other on. “It’s fun to be part of something bigger than yourself,” he says.
In addition to his athletic pursuits, Sandler is a dedicated student who enjoys math and social studies. Inspired by teachers like Mrs. Harrison and Mr. Cantrell, he excels in the classroom and values the lessons his teachers impart.
“My fifth-grade teachers really got me interested in social studies,” Sandler shares. “I’ve been lucky to have great teachers every year.”
Sandler’s ability to balance sports, academics, and other interests is a testament to his discipline and time management.
Sandler’s ambitions extend beyond athletics. He dreams of becoming a sports broadcaster, inspired by figures like Ernie Johnson and Jim Nantz. His experience speaking on the radio during a basketball state tournament has further fueled this passion.
“Broadcasting would be an amazing career,” Sandler says. “I love talking about sports and sharing the excitement with others.”
When asked what he appreciates most about Benton, Sandler points to the sense of community. “Growing up here has been great,” he says. “I’ll always remember playing sports with my friends and the support we’ve had from our teachers and coaches.”
Sandler also enjoys spending time outdoors with his family, fishing, and camping near Benton’s local lakes. These moments, combined with his experiences at Benton Jr. High, have shaped him into a well-rounded individual ready to take on future challenges.
