Ella Stanley: Striking a Balance Between Sports and Studies
“Our teams are so encouraging.”

Ella Stanley, a 7th grader at Benton Jr. High, is an ambitious student-athlete who thrives on the court, the field, and in the classroom. Balancing a rigorous sports schedule with her advanced academic pursuits, Ella has quickly become a role model for her peers.
Softball has been a passion for Ella since she first picked up a bat and glove in elementary school. Now a standout player for Benton Jr. High, she serves as the team’s primary pitcher and fills in as a shortstop when needed.
“Pitching is my favorite part of the game,” Ella shares. “I also like making new friends. I’ve made a lot of friends through softball.”
“Softball is a team sport, but it also depends on individual effort,” Ella explains. “I love that balance—working with my teammates and pushing myself to do better every game.”
Ella also plays travel softball with a team based out of Marion, Illinois. While her school and travel teams don’t overlap in players, she cherishes the friendships and connections she’s made.
Playing on the girl’s basketball JV and varsity teams keeps Ella busy between breaks in her other sports. Ella plays guard and generally enjoys the team sport. She finds the whole team encouraging, especially her teammate Keezley Wilson.
Ella brings her competitive spirit to the volleyball court as well, playing as an outside hitter. After playing on the JV team last year, she’s eager to step up to varsity this season.
Ella’s serve has become one of her strongest assets, and she isn’t afraid to dive for a ball to keep a rally going. Her determination and enthusiasm make her a key player for the team.
When it comes to track, Ella’s versatility shines. She competes in the 100-meter sprint, hurdles, the 4x100 relay, and discus. Among these events, hurdles and sprints are her favorites, allowing her to showcase her speed and agility.
“Track is great because it’s both individual and team-focused,” Ella says. “In relays, you’re working with your teammates to get the best time, but in hurdles, it’s just you and the track.”
In addition to her athletic pursuits, Ella excels in her studies, maintaining straight A’s and taking advanced math. Balancing sports and academics can be challenging, but Ella has developed a system that works for her.
“I chose to have two study halls in my schedule,” she explains. “It gives me time to finish my homework during the day, so I don’t fall behind with all my practices and games.”
Ella’s favorite subject is language arts, where she enjoys writing and expressing her creativity. She also serves on the student council, further demonstrating her leadership skills and commitment to making a positive impact at school.
When asked what it means to be a part of Benton Jr. High’s athletic teams, Ella describes it as being part of a family. “Our teams are so encouraging,” she says. “We support each other, and that makes every game and practice more fun.”
Ella also appreciates the support from the Benton community, noting the importance of cheering crowds and fundraising efforts. “Seeing people come to our games and support us means so much,” she says.
Ella’s dreams extend far beyond Benton Jr. High. Inspired by her favorite softball player, Jocelyn Alo, she hopes to attend the University of Oklahoma and play softball at the collegiate level.
“Jocelyn Alo is such an amazing player, and I’ve always admired her,” Ella says. “Going to Oklahoma and playing for their team would be a dream come true.”
